Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative talents in her early years, thanks to Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theatre in daylight. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed the film to DuVernay. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful tool for activism. DuVernay's mother also had the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to communicate by means of art. DuVernay was raised living with family members in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to make a film about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English as well as African American studies. As in school, DuVernay was interested in creating for television journalism. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to look at the trash of a jury member's home. She was disappointed by the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio, right after graduating from college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999.
